With a vacation home, you should follow your own interests in selecting its location. If you are an avid skier, you know which resort towns are already overcrowded and overpriced. You’re not going to buy in one of those. You probably know or have heard about accessible towns near great skiing country that are only now being developed. Those are the kinds of places in which to buy, but only after you have checked firsthand on their potential. Don’t rely on the judgment of friends; investigate for yourself. Find out why the area has not been developed before? Be sure you know the real story.

Does the vacation area you are considering have a single season or do people come there in other seasons? For example, a ski resort in winter may be a fishing or hiking resort in summer, and a hunting resort in fall.

Ask the following questions: Is the resort popular with only certain kinds of people? Is the terrain so rugged that only young, athletic people come? Do bars and clubs keep families away? In time, could this be your retirement home?
